What is Reiki?
Reiki is two Japanese characters which literally translate as “Spiritual Energy” (“Rei” = Universal Spirit + “Ki” =Energy). It is a system of natural healing that is a modern approach based on ancient Asian philosophies and mystic knowledge of universal energetic fields. The Reiki System of Natural Healing was developed in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist monk. The Reiki System was brought to the West over 80 years ago.
Increasing acceptance and use in hospitals, hospices, spas and wellness centers has made the Reiki System one of the most in-demand healing modalities in the US and around the world. The Reiki System uses non-invasive, gentle touch, accelerates the body’s natural healing processes and supports mental and emotional healing, giving an overall sense of profound well-being.
Reiki balances the physical body system as well as the electromagnetic and subtle energy fields in and around the body. It is self-intelligent and self-organizing and needs no direction as to where it should go; it knows where to find the imbalance and goes there. The Reiki practitioner acts as the conduit for the intelligent energy to pass through. The Reiki does the healing, not the practitioner. Reiki always goes where it is needed and can be used not only on people, but also plants, animals, food, water, and for clearing rooms and to send distant healing.
It is the Reiki practitioner’s job to stay connected to this Universal Energy through a regular committed meditation practice and other centering practices as well as their own self-care through Reiki. The practitioner uses a light, gentle touch on or above the body and focuses the energy into areas throughout the body. A session usually lasts 1 to 1.5 hours and the client remains fully clothed. The Reiki is the teacher and the knower of the client’s own body and inner wisdom.
Reiki vibrations reorganize imbalances in the body such as chronic fatigue, chronic stress, inflammation, chronic pain, and emotional upheavals – past and present. Reiki can help strengthen the immune system, enhance mental clarity and facilitate personal and spiritual growth. Reiki vibrations induce a reorganization of the physical body system and the bio-field in and around the body. This results in a relaxation response that allows the mind-body continuum to adjust and rebalance itself – either immediately, or over time with regular sessions – depending upon the client and their individual concerns and needs. Note that Reiki works best cumulatively over time with regular sessions.
Reiki sessions are not a replacement for any treatment prescribed by a doctor, licensed health care practitioner, or mental health professional. However, Reiki supports and accelerates such prescribed treatments.
